Art Imitates Life for:Natasha

Vanessa Redgrave CBE is a pre-eminent English stage, television and film actress. She is a member of the Redgrave family, the world-renowned theatrical dynasty.

LOS ANGELES Fiction has become a painful reality for Natasha Richardson's mother, Vanessa Redgrave.

In 2007, Redgrave portrayed writer Joan Didion on Broadway in the play "The Year of Magical Thinking." The play was based on Didion's own memoir about losing both her husband, John Gregory Dunne, and then her daughter, Quintana. Ironically Quintana was hospitalized after a collapse and bleeding in her brain.

The book seems to mirror the experience that Redgrave and her family have had in the wake of Natasha Richardson's unexpected death. As Didion writes in the opening lines, "Life changes fast. Life changes in an instant. You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends."

And at the end of the book , Didion reflects upon grief and how we don't really understand our reaction to it until we've gone through it.

"Grief turns out to be a place none of us know until we reach it. We anticipate [we know] that someone close to us could die, but we do not look beyond the few days or weeks that immediately follow such an imagined death."
